OUTWARD BOUND 2005!!! (part 1)

just wanna say this is probably going to be really boring to read :P. so i wouldnt :P and its like only half of it

Words to describe it would be; once in a life time.

Outward bound once i got there aim was totally different from what i thought it was all about. Going in i thought that the idea of outward bound was to go camping, have some fun and walk and walk and walk, with heavy packs i might add. but bound to my surprise i found was beyond that. its aim was to challenge you in four areas, physical, mental, emotional, and social. these challengers pushed you beyond your comfort zones.

a few things that you realise out on bound

on day four we got told the outward bound story, and it goes like as follows.

in world war 2, Larence Halt an english shipping company owner was constantly under attack by german U-boats. from time to time the sailer was able to get on to life rafts and wait to be rescued. seeing that it was war time rescues would take at times a take to long for the sailer to be survived. from the ones that were rescued in time the owner saw that most of the survivors were sailers of an older age than the ones of younger age, the fitter and stronger men. he soon realised that the younger men had not understood there own physical, emotional, and physiological abilities. while the older men were able to draw on there own life experiences to see them though the tough hard ships on the life boat. to address this problem he and Kurt Hahn (DOE founder) sorted a plan to help the sailers make it though the hard times. each sailer before join the company would go though 28 days of extreme hardships and community service. thus outward bound was formed.

thank goodness its not that hard :P

well now im done talking about other stuff this is what happened on bound.

Day one

we were confused, wet, and cold. this was before we even got off the bus. well we got off the bus and met our two instructors Leo and James. Leo was an instructor that came from Brazil and really crazy and weird. James as a training instructor and was heaps cool to muck around with. after that we played some ice breaker games. once of which was to write your name in the air with your ass and then turn around and yell out your name. as leo would say "in front of thousands and thousands of chicks, all wanting to know your name". after the ice breakers we started to pack our packs. this included water proofing all the cloths and sleeping bag, and packing the food and personal gear. man it was so heavy :(. lucky our first camp site was just about 5 minutes walk from where we were dropped off. set up our bivvies which were so poor. Got our set bivvie groups mixed around and end up sleeping with jp, brendan, and rob. after that got placed in environment group which meant we set up the craper and the paper trail, set up jean (leo: " say hi to jean, hi jean"), and to organise the emu bop. after setting up camp had dinner, had a medical check with leo and james, did the supermarket (organise the food for the next two days, and write down the menu. the food given was so bad, but it grows on you), and went to bed around 11:00.

Day two

woke up at 5:30 had breakfast packed everything up and left camp at about 9:00 (took us three and a half hours :|). started our three massive peeks hike. the first day of this section we walked 10 k with our packs. during the hikes leo would stop every so often to either do some celebrations like yelling or dancing, or we would learn how to navigate. i had a go at navigation, managed not to get lost :D. had lunch and because we had to clean up properly so we walked a k away and then leo stoped us and make up go back to pick up a one stupid bandaid, ahhh so annoying. some time after lunch i managed to lose one of my river crossing shoes which sucked, becuase - 1. they were my normal shoes 2. i ended up having to do my river crossing in my boots making them wet for the rest of the camp. walked a bit more to our camp site. got our bivvies up, which was pretty hard becuase jp was sick so me and singh had to do it. got put on fire for the night (colect fire wood, start the fire, maintain the fire, put the fire out, burn the burnables, throw out the coals in the morning, cover the pit). had a good night though and went to bed around 10:30.

Day three
woke up at 5:30 got ready and packed, left about 8:15. had an even bigger walk a head. walked walked walked. walked 11k over mountains and mountains. umm cant really remember anything else that happened ... it rained. ooh had my first major rivier crossing. it was about waist high and was so very cold. that day was probably one of the worst. we thought we were there a little while after the crossing but there was so much more. got to camp about 6:30. that night jp though up so it was pretty bad as well. changed to cooking group which sucked cos you had to cook and serve, so you were last to eat. cooked the greatest pasta though. yummy yummy bacon. man when we were preparing the bacon they started to cut off the bacon fat, which really freaked me out. oooh and we had "soup". i come back and the cooking groups like yeah we're having soup so i just chopped up the rest of the veg. half way though cooking it starts to turn a chocolate colour, every ones like you must of added the chocolate powder with the soup, it should still be fine. after serving it, every once toughing it out because the added coffee powder to it as well. it was so bad. i would like to say i had nothing to do with the adding of the powder in the soup. we had another food drop so we had to do the supermarket thing again. went to bed around 11:00.

man this is getting long so im going to post this and then finish the rest some time ... later :P
